It is 4:30 in the afternoon on a windy bluff above Monterey Bay. The wedding is supposed to start at five, I’m setting up a camera, and the bride’s brother is on the phone trying to get an ETA because half the East Coast guests are stuck in traffic. The bride is calm, it’s the family that is coming apart.
I have filmed hundreds of weddings across California, Utah, North Carolina, and the Bay Area, and almost every time something went wrong on a wedding day, the problem started months earlier because the planning didn’t account for the drive from the airport, the weather window, or some other logistical hurdle that no one thought to consider until the day of.
Most couples struggle to find their venue, it’s the first big wedding planning decision, and for good reason: a venue is locked in by everything around it. The flights, the hotels, the weather, the vendor pool, the timing, the cost per guest, and everything else can only sit on top of the location. That’s why looking at the location first, before falling for a venue, makes the rest of the planning so much easier.
The bridezilla myth, and where the wedding stress actually came from
People always ask me if I saw bridezillas in those ten years and the honest answer is almost never. In the vast majority of weddings I filmed, the brides and grooms were calm. The stress came from a parent worried about cost or a sibling worried about logistics, a relative who could not afford the flight, a vendor stretched too thin because they were imported from out of the area.

The second is a decade of fieldwork: I have filmed hundreds of weddings from San Francisco, Napa, and Sonoma to Monterey, Lake Tahoe, the Central Coast, Utah, and North Carolina.
Where WeddingUFO is going next, and why it matters at scale
There are roughly 2.1 million weddings a year in the United States. A meaningful share of them are destination weddings, meaning the couple travels for it.
