A wedding venue deposit can be $39 or the entire rental, and what you get back if plans change matters more than what you put down.
We read the published booking terms of 24 wedding venues in 15 states and Washington, DC, from city park halls to private ballrooms. Nineteen say exactly what it takes to hold a date, and the range is wider than most couples expect: a $39 booking fee in Seattle, the full $7,000 rental within a week in Atlanta. Below is what each kind of deposit costs, when the rest is due, what you lose if you cancel, and how to compare two venues before you sign. Every amount and rule below was checked against the venue's own published terms in October 2026.
How Much Is a Wedding Venue Deposit
Of the 19 venues that publish their terms, eight take a fixed sum of $39 to $1,000 to hold the date, four take a share of the rental, from 20 to 50 percent, and seven take the whole rental when you book. Most also collect a separate, refundable damage deposit of $250 to $1,500. So there is no standard percentage; the venue's type predicts the deposit better than its price does.
Two different payments hide behind the word "deposit", and it pays to keep them apart. The booking deposit (also called a reservation fee, retainer or down payment) holds your date and is usually credited toward the rental. The damage deposit (or security deposit) is a separate sum the venue keeps until after the wedding and returns if the room comes back clean and on time. When a venue says the deposit is refundable, ask which one it means.
Is a Wedding Venue Deposit Refundable
Usually the booking deposit is not, and the damage deposit is. But the answer that matters is what you lose if you cancel early, and that ranges from $25 to the entire rental among venues that publish it.
At the generous end are city venues. Cameron Park Clubhouse sits in Waco's 416-acre Cameron Park, among tall trees and two rivers, and rents for $1,350 a day plus a $250 refundable deposit. You pay in full to book, but you get it all back, less a $25 fee, if you cancel up to seven days before the event; if weather spoils the day, you can reschedule at no charge1. Raleigh's Borden Building at Fred Fletcher Park, a house from about 1900 with gardens, a stone circle and a wooded aisle, falls under the city's parks policy: a full refund minus a 15 percent administrative fee if you cancel at least 14 days ahead, after paying in full when the city approves the booking23.
At the other end, the money is gone the day you pay. The Jewel Box, a 1936 Art Deco conservatory in St. Louis's Forest Park with more than 4,000 panes of glass, takes the full fee at booking: $3,250 for a Friday or Saturday reception. "Once payment is received, the date cannot be changed and the fee is non-refundable"4. Summerour Studio in Atlanta, an old factory rebuilt to feel like a Tuscan villa, takes the full rental within seven days of the contract, $7,000 on a Saturday, and every payment is "non-refundable and non-transferable"5.
In between, the money you get back shrinks as the date approaches. Ravenswood Mansion, a restored 1825 mansion on 400 acres of wooded hills in Brentwood, Tennessee, publishes the clearest schedule we found: cancel more than 180 days out and the city returns half the deposit; between 90 and 180 days, 25 percent of what you have paid; inside 90 days, no rental refund at all6.
The Three Kinds of Wedding Venue Deposit
A fixed booking fee. Mostly parks departments and clubs. Golden Gardens Bathhouse, a 1929 brick bathhouse on the beach in Seattle with a meadow for the ceremony, asks a $39 non-refundable booking fee and a $250 refundable damage deposit, or $500 with alcohol, within five business days of confirmation7. Aspen Hall in Bend, a lodge-style hall with a wood-burning fireplace beside Shevlin Pond, takes a $250 non-refundable booking deposit that counts toward the rental8. Cheney Mansion, a historic mansion in Oak Park run by the park district, takes $500, and although you lose it if you cancel, you can move it to a new date within a year9. Davis Islands Garden Club, a waterfront garden near downtown Tampa, holds the date with a $700 refundable security deposit10.
A share of the rental. Bragg-Mitchell Mansion, an 1855 Greek Revival mansion in Mobile on the National Register, takes a non-refundable 50 percent of the rental; a Saturday is $4,995, so that is about $2,50011. Josephine Butler Parks Center, a 40-room mansion above Meridian Hill Park in Washington, takes half the space rental plus a $25 membership fee, also non-refundable, but first lets you hold a date free for seven days12. The Chicago Cultural Center, under the world's largest Tiffany dome, asks 20 percent at contract on packages of $14,550 to $18,150, after a free ten-business-day hold13.
The whole rental up front. Besides the Jewel Box and Summerour, The Biltmore Ballrooms in Atlanta's historic Biltmore Hotel ($7,000 for the Georgian Ballroom on a 2026 Saturday)14, the Great Hall at Silverwood Park on Silver Lake outside Minneapolis ($3,500 Friday to Sunday, plus a $1,500 facility deposit)15 and Newland Barn in Huntington Beach all take full payment at booking. Paying everything early is not the problem; what matters is whether any of it comes back, which is the next table.

When the Rest Is Due: The Wedding Venue Payment Schedule
If the deposit does not cover the rental, the balance is due well before the wedding, and 90 days out is the most common deadline. Golden Gardens, Aspen Hall, Davis Islands Garden Club and Cheney Mansion all want the balance three months before; Davis Islands adds, "We do not offer payment plans or partial payments"10. Zilker Botanical Garden in Austin, with its oak-shaded promenade above the rose garden, and Alhambra Hall, the town-owned hall over Charleston Harbor in Mount Pleasant, want it 30 days before1617. Ravenswood wants it six months out, and miss that and "the event will be cancelled with no refunds given"6.
Summerour and the Biltmore Ballrooms split it in three: the rental when you sign, the beverage minimum six months before, and the final balance plus a $1,500 refundable damage deposit ten days before5. Write each date in your calendar the day you sign, because at most of these venues a missed payment cancels the booking and keeps what you have paid.

How to Get Your Wedding Venue Damage Deposit Back
The damage deposit is the one you control, and the published rules say how venues keep it. Leave on time: at Newland Barn, if your event runs past its end time, "you are subject to a full forfeiture of your rental deposit"18. Keep the volume down: Cheney Mansion keeps it for music violations, and for smoke that sets off the fire alarm9. Follow the decor rules: Davis Islands keeps it if you break them10. Clean up and get it signed: Zilker returns its $425 in full once the space is restored and the cleanup checklist is signed, within a week for online payments16. Cheney Mansion refunds its deposit two to four weeks after the event9.
Ask your caterer or planner to own the cleanup checklist and the end time, and photograph the room as you hand it back.
How to Compare Wedding Venue Deposits Before You Sign
1. Ask for the cancellation schedule, not the deposit. Ask: "If we cancel six months out, what do we get back?" That one number puts every venue on the same scale, whatever it calls its payments.
2. Ask which payments are refundable, in writing. The booking deposit, the rental, the damage deposit and any beverage minimum can each have their own rule. Summerour's are all non-refundable; the Ypsilanti Freighthouse, a restored freight depot on the National Register in Depot Town, refunds the full rental and half its $400 deposit if you cancel 60 or more days out19.
3. Ask about moving the date, not just cancelling. A date change is the more likely event, and it is often cheaper. Golden Gardens charges $25 to reschedule with 30 days' notice7; Ravenswood moves you free more than 180 days out and for 15 percent between 90 and 180 days, once, within 12 months6; the Jewel Box will not move you at all.
4. Put every payment date in one place. Booking deposit, balance, beverage minimum, damage deposit, final guest count. Count them back from your date the day you sign.
5. Hold before you pay. Josephine Butler gives seven days free and the Chicago Cultural Center ten business days1213. Use the hold to read the contract and compare, then pay.
When a Large Non-Refundable Deposit Is Fine
If your date is fixed, your families have agreed and you have the cash, a venue that takes everything up front costs you nothing extra, and those venues are often the ones whose dates go first. The Jewel Box books up to two years ahead4. The risk is all in the change of plans, so a non-refundable deposit is a reason to settle your date and guest count first, not a reason to skip a venue you love.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a wedding venue deposit?
Anywhere from a small fixed fee to the full rental. Among 19 venues that publish their terms, eight take $39 to $1,000, four take 20 to 50 percent of the rental, and seven take the whole rental at booking. Most also hold a separate refundable damage deposit of $250 to $1,500.
What percentage is a typical wedding venue deposit?
There is no standard; when a venue takes a share, 50 percent is common. Bragg-Mitchell Mansion, Ravenswood Mansion and Josephine Butler Parks Center take half the rental, and the Chicago Cultural Center takes 20 percent. Many public venues take a fixed fee instead, and some private ones take 100 percent.
Is a wedding venue deposit refundable?
The booking deposit usually is not, and the damage deposit usually is. Some venues refund nearly everything if you cancel early: Cameron Park Clubhouse in Waco keeps only $25 up to seven days before. Others, like the Jewel Box in St. Louis, refund nothing once you pay.
Can a wedding venue keep your deposit?
Yes, if your contract says it is non-refundable. That is why the cancellation schedule matters more than the deposit amount. Read it, and ask for any promise of a refund or date change in writing.
How do I get my wedding venue deposit back?
For the damage deposit, end on time, follow the noise and decor rules, clean up, and get the checklist signed. For the booking deposit, cancel early enough to fall in the venue's refund window, or ask to move the date instead, which many venues allow.
When is the final payment due for a wedding venue?
Most often 90 days before the wedding. Among the venues we checked, deadlines run from six months out at Ravenswood Mansion to ten days out at Summerour Studio and the Biltmore Ballrooms, and some venues take everything at booking.
Do wedding venues offer payment plans?
Few publish one. Most split the cost into a deposit and a balance, and Davis Islands Garden Club states outright that it does not offer payment plans or partial payments. Ask before you book.
What is the difference between a booking deposit and a damage deposit?
A booking deposit holds your date and is usually credited toward the rental. A damage deposit is a separate sum held until after the wedding and returned if the venue is left clean, undamaged and on time.
