How far in advance to book a wedding venue: most couples book 11 to 14 months out, but each venue's own rules decide, from six months to two years.
We read the published booking rules of 22 wedding venues and public sites in 14 states, from Nashville event halls and Hill Country ranches to city parks and national parks. The earliest you can book runs from six months ahead at Austin's Zilker Botanical Garden to two years at Clementine Hall in Nashville and the Jewel Box in St. Louis. The latest runs from 72 hours before at Acadia National Park to 90 days in Savannah's Forsyth Park. Below is when to book, which dates go first, how opening-day lotteries work, and what is left if you are planning late. Every rule below was checked against the venue's or the agency's own published terms in October 2026.
How Far in Advance Should You Book a Wedding Venue
Book 12 to 18 months ahead if you want a Saturday in spring or fall at a popular private venue, and 11 to 14 months for most others. That is when couples typically book, according to The Knot's venue study, and venues are usually the first thing they book1. Public venues often cannot be booked more than a year out.
The surveys leave plenty of room for that. Zola's 2026 First Look Report, from more than 11,500 couples marrying in 2026, puts the average engagement at 18 months2, so a couple who starts looking in the first two or three months is on schedule. The venues themselves say the same thing. Key Largo Lighthouse Beach, a private beach estate in the Florida Keys, writes that "the majority of couples typically secure their dates about 12-15 months ahead"3. Contigo Ranch, a working guest ranch outside Fredericksburg, says its "prime dates tend to book 12-18 months in advance," especially spring and fall weekends4.
A few couples now start before the proposal. Zola found that 7 percent of its couples had booked a venue before they were engaged, up from 6 percent a year earlier, and 10 percent had toured one2. That is not a rule to follow, but it tells you who you are competing with for an October Saturday.
How Far in Advance Can You Book a Wedding Venue
As far ahead as the venue's calendar opens, and every venue sets that differently. This is the number to find first, because it tells you when the race for your date starts.
Private venues open furthest ahead. Clementine Hall, a restored Art Deco hall with a courtyard in Nashville's Nations neighborhood, books "up to 24 months out" and posts a new month of availability every month5. Key Largo Lighthouse Beach accepts reservations "up to 2 years in advance"3. In October 2026, Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards near Charlottesville was already "Now Booking Weddings for 2028"6.
City venues usually open 12 to 18 months ahead, and some less. The Jewel Box, a 1936 Art Deco glass conservatory in St. Louis's Forest Park, takes reservations "up to two years in advance," in person only, with the full rental due on the spot7. Ravenswood Mansion, an 1825 mansion owned by the City of Brentwood, Tennessee, and Aspen Hall, a lodge-style hall in Bend's Shevlin Park, both cap it at 18 months89. Cameron Park Clubhouse in Waco takes bookings "up to 12 months in advance"10, and Newland Barn in Huntington Beach "up to a year in advance to the date"11. Zilker Botanical Garden in Austin is the shortest we found: "reservations can only be made up to six months in advance"12.
National parks open one year ahead. Yosemite, Great Smoky Mountains and Acadia all accept wedding permit applications up to one year before the date131415. Rocky Mountain National Park counts from the month: applications are accepted "one year in advance of your desired wedding month"16.
When Booking Opens: Lotteries and Opening Days
At the most popular public venues, the day a date opens matters more than how early you start. Several hand out the first-day demand by lottery or by the clock.
- Seattle's Golden Gardens Bathhouse, a 1929 brick bathhouse on Puget Sound, takes lottery applications "as early as the first business day of the month, one year in advance," and draws them the next month, 11 months out17.
- Bend's Aspen Hall runs a lottery if several requests arrive "prior to 9:00 AM on the exact date 18 months in advance"9.
- Savannah's Forsyth Park opens a whole month at once: for a wedding on July 25, 2027, "you may apply starting at 12:01 AM on July 1st, 2026"18.
- San Francisco Recreation and Parks takes outdoor wedding reservations up to a year ahead and settles requests for the same date by random drawing19.
- Central Park's Conservatory Garden in New York opens "annually on January 1 for all dates in the calendar year"20.
If your venue works like this, put the opening day in your calendar and apply on it. A day late can mean a different date.
Which Wedding Dates Book Up First
Saturdays in fall, then spring. October is the most popular wedding month, with 17 percent of weddings in The Knot's study of 2024 couples, and the study expected the two most popular days of 2025 to be Saturdays, September 20 and October 2521. The venues' own calendars show it a year ahead. Mt. Hood Organic Farms, an orchard estate under Mount Hood with a season from Memorial Day to early October, wrote this fall that "our 2026 wedding season is fully booked and we are now booking for 2027"22. Engadine Inn & Cabins, an 1885 Victorian inn outside Asheville, says "fall color season fills a year or more ahead"23.
The calendar is about to get busier. Engagement season peaks in December, according to The Knot Worldwide's global report24, so many couples start touring venues from January. If you are already engaged, the weeks before the holidays are a quiet time to book.

Can You Book a Wedding Venue Last Minute
Yes, often for less, if your date is flexible. Many venues publish a minimum notice, and it is shorter than couples expect: seven days at Aspen Hall and Cameron Park Clubhouse910, and 30 days at Key Largo Lighthouse Beach, which accepts reservations "as close as 30 days prior to arrival"3.
The best deal we found is in Tennessee. Ravenswood Mansion publishes a 30 Day Out Rate: "Unreserved dates may be booked within 30 days of an event for 50% of the regular rental rate"8. Small weddings move fastest. Engadine Inn says "elopements and small ceremonies can come together in a matter of days when the date is open"23.
Public outdoor sites need more notice than a private hall, because a permit has to be processed. Acadia accepts applications up to 72 hours before, Yosemite wants them more than 21 days ahead, the Great Smoky Mountains 30 days, and Savannah's Forsyth Park 90 days15131418.

How to Book Your Wedding Venue at the Right Time
1. Find the booking window before you fall for a venue. Look for "booking window", "reservations accepted up to" or "now booking" on the venue's site. If it is not there, ask: "How far ahead do you open dates, and how do you handle two requests for the same day?"
2. Count back from your date and mark the opening day. For a city venue with a 12-month window, a Saturday in October 2027 opens in October 2026. If there is a lottery, apply on the first day it accepts entries.
3. Ask for a free hold while you decide. Contigo Ranch offers a "complimentary 10-day Hold"4, and the Chicago Cultural Center gives a 10-business-day courtesy hold before a contract25. A hold costs nothing and stops someone else taking the date while you compare.
4. Book early to lock this year's price. William Allen Farm, a saltwater farm with a post-and-beam barn in Pownal, Maine, is booking 2027 and 2028 at $8,500 for the full weekend, "the rate when you book now," rising to $9,500 next year26. Many venues raise rates each January, so a date signed in the fall can cost less than the same date signed in the spring.
5. Book the venue first, then the vendors. The venue fixes the date, and photographers, caterers and bands book against it. Before you sign, check what the deposit commits you to.

6. If you are flexible, wait for the short-notice dates. A Friday, a winter month or a date inside 30 days can be open at venues whose Saturdays are gone, and some, like Ravenswood, price them lower.
When Booking Early Does Not Help
At public venues with short windows, starting early gets you nothing. You cannot book Zilker Botanical Garden more than six months out, or a national park more than a year out, however early you call. If your heart is set on one of them, keep a backup venue in mind until your date is confirmed, and do not book other vendors for that date before the permit or contract is in hand.

How Far Ahead to Book Where You Are Getting Married
The pattern holds in most places: popular private venues open 18 to 24 months ahead and fill fall Saturdays first, city venues open 12 to 18 months ahead, and parks open a year ahead with a minimum notice measured in days or weeks. Each venue's own site has the details, and most publish them plainly. If you have not settled on where to marry yet, start with the place: browse all 141 destinations, then check each venue's window there.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance do you need to book a wedding venue?
Most couples book 11 to 14 months before the wedding. For a Saturday in spring or fall at a popular venue, aim for 12 to 18 months; for a weekday, an off-season date or a small wedding, six months or less is often enough.
How far in advance can you book a wedding venue?
Usually up to 12 to 24 months, depending on the venue. Clementine Hall in Nashville and the Jewel Box in St. Louis open dates two years ahead, Ravenswood Mansion and Aspen Hall 18 months, and Zilker Botanical Garden in Austin only six months.
Is 6 months enough time to book a wedding venue?
Yes, if you are flexible about the day or the venue. Fall Saturdays at popular venues are usually gone by then, but Fridays, Sundays, winter dates and city venues with short windows are often open, and some venues discount dates that are still free close in.
Is 1 year enough time to plan a wedding?
Yes. It is about the time most couples book their venue, 11 to 14 months out, and it leaves room to book the other vendors afterward. A popular fall Saturday may already be taken, so have a second date in mind.
How far in advance should you book a national park wedding?
Apply as soon as the park opens applications, usually one year ahead. Yosemite, Acadia and the Great Smoky Mountains accept permit applications up to a year before, and each sets a minimum notice, from 72 hours at Acadia to 30 days in the Smokies.
Can you book a wedding venue last minute?
Yes, if the date is open. Many venues take bookings 7 to 30 days out, and Ravenswood Mansion in Brentwood, Tennessee, rents dates still open within 30 days for half its regular rate. Small ceremonies and elopements are the easiest to fit in.
What should you book first for a wedding?
The venue. It fixes the date and the guest count that every other vendor books against, which is why couples usually book it before anyone else.
When do wedding venues raise their prices?
Many raise rates for the next year, and some publish the increase. William Allen Farm in Maine charges $8,500 for a weekend booked now and $9,500 from next year, so booking earlier can lock in the lower price.
