What time do weddings end? At most venues between 10 p.m. and midnight, and the venue's contract decides which, not the DJ.

We read the published rules of 22 wedding venues in 16 states and Washington, DC, from city park halls and arboretums to Texas ranches and downtown ballrooms, plus the county permits and city noise codes that sit behind many of them. The latest end times run from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., and an extra hour, where you can buy one, costs from $250 to $5,000. Every end time, price and rule below was checked against the venue's own published terms in October 2026.

What Time Do Most Weddings End

Nineteen of the 22 venues end the party by midnight. One ends at 9 p.m., seven at 10 p.m., three at 11 p.m., nine at midnight and two at 1 a.m. City-run and garden venues cluster at 10 p.m.; downtown ballrooms and historic halls at midnight. The 10 p.m. group includes Aldrich Mansion in Warwick, Rhode Island, and the Black Star Farms winery in Suttons Bay, Michigan; Greenbrier Farms in Easley, South Carolina, runs to 11 p.m.; Paniolo Ranch in Boerne, Texas, and Dream Point Ranch in Bixby, Oklahoma, run to midnight. The earliest is Cedar Valley Arboretum in Waterloo, Iowa, which allows no rental activity after 9 p.m.1; Cheyenne Botanic Gardens in Wyoming asks guests and vendors to leave by 10 p.m.2; and The Paxton Ballroom in Omaha gives six hours of event time ending by midnight3. So the honest answer to "what time do weddings end" is: whenever your venue's last hour is, and you should know that hour before you book.

The end time also decides when the ceremony starts. Most venues sell a fixed block of event time, and the ceremony usually sits inside it: at The Indiana Roof Ballroom in Indianapolis, a starlit 1927 Spanish-village ballroom downtown, weddings "may last up to six hours and must end no later than 12:00 AM", and "the ceremony time is included in the six hour time frame"4. Six hours back from midnight is a 6 p.m. ceremony. Start earlier and the party ends earlier.

Why Wedding Venues Have a Curfew

Most curfews are not the venue's preference. They come from a permit, a noise code or the neighbors, which is also why a venue cannot simply waive them for a good tip.

County permits. In California wine country the end time is often written into the venue's land-use permit. Napa County approves winery events one permit at a time; a 2017 staff report for one winery reads "All events would end by 10:00 p.m.", and amplified music is not allowed outdoors under the county's standard condition5. In Sonoma County, a wedding that runs outside 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., or that has live amplified music, needs a special events permit6.

City noise codes. Denver limits amplified sound at residential property lines to 55 decibels until 10 p.m. and 50 after, and private events such as weddings get no special allowance7. Austin's outdoor music venue permits near homes run to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and can be extended by up to two hours only with the neighbors' support8.

Alcohol law. The bar closes by law even where the music does not. In Texas, a venue with a standard mixed beverage permit stops serving at midnight on weekdays and 1 a.m. after a Saturday, later only with a late-hours certificate, and nobody may drink more than 15 minutes after closing9. In California, no alcohol may be sold between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.10

The neighbors. Granite Ridge Estate, a 200-acre property in Norway, Maine, lets weddings run to 1 a.m. but asks that the barn doors be shut at 10 p.m. "for noise control and out of respect for our neighbors"11. Rollins Mansion in Des Moines caps outdoor music at 93 dBA "due to the residential location"12. At Contigo Ranch outside Fredericksburg, barn events end at 10 p.m., "when our Watusi cattle neighbors turn in for the night", and the hall at 11 p.m.13

The End Time Usually Includes Cleanup

This is the detail that catches couples out. At many venues the end time is when the building is empty, not when the music stops. Golden Gardens Bathhouse, Seattle's 1929 beach bathhouse on Puget Sound, is available until 10 p.m., and the city's application asks for an "End Time (includes cleanup)"14. Cameron Park Clubhouse in Waco rents from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and "set up, decorating & clean up must be included in your rental time"15. Josephine Butler Parks Center, a Renaissance Revival mansion above Meridian Hill Park in Washington, allows events as late as 1 a.m., but "all set-up & clean-up must be included in the reservation"16.

So at a 10 p.m. venue with cleanup inside the block, the last song is closer to 9 p.m. Other venues give you the cleanup hour on top: Contigo Ranch allows "an extra hour for cleanup at the conclusion of your event"13, and at Summerour Studio, a bow-truss loft across from Atlantic Station in Atlanta, "events must end by midnight (ok to load out 12-1am)"17.

The bar closes before the music, too. Old Glory Ranch in Wimberley closes its bars 30 minutes before the scheduled end of the event18.

What an Extra Hour Costs at a Wedding Venue

Where a venue sells overtime, the price runs twentyfold from cheapest to dearest, and some of it has to be booked weeks ahead.

At the cheap end, Old Metropolitan Hall, a vaulted hall on Charlottesville's downtown pedestrian mall, includes seven hours of event time and sells the hours past its midnight curfew, up to 2 a.m., for $250 an hour or partial hour19. Cedar Valley Arboretum sells evening hours, 6 to 9 p.m., at $375 each1, and Golden Gardens rents by the hour at $290 for the main room plus $78 for staff14. In the middle, Dream Point Ranch adds hours at $500 each20 and Vista West Ranch in Dripping Springs extends the end time for $750 an hour21. The Chicago Cultural Center, whose wedding packages start at $14,550, charges $1,000 for each hour beyond six, and every event still ends by midnight22.

At the top, San Francisco City Hall ends evening weddings at midnight and charges $5,000 an hour for late access for guests, plus the sheriffs, engineer and event manager who have to stay23.

Two rules matter as much as the price. At St. Francis Hall in Washington, extra time costs $800 an hour, must be added at least 30 days before the wedding, and has to run next to your existing block, so it can extend the start or the end, not open a gap24. And at The Biltmore Ballrooms in Midtown Atlanta's 1924 Biltmore landmark, four hours of event time are included and the $500 an hour fee applies only to time after midnight25.

What Happens If Your Wedding Runs Late

Do not plan on talking your way into a few more minutes on the night. The venues that publish a penalty make it expensive.

You can lose your deposit. At Newland Barn, Huntington Beach's city-run barn, the city states "No exceptions made for rental time", and an event that runs past its end time is "subject to a full forfeiture" of the $500 deposit26.

You can pay a penalty rate. At Golden Gardens, events that run long are charged time-and-a-half for the room and the staff, and risk the whole damage deposit14.

The music can be cut. Josephine Butler keeps amplified sound below 60 decibels until 10 p.m. and 55 after, and its event host may turn off the DJ's power if asked more than once to lower the volume16. At LSU's Hilltop Arboretum in Baton Rouge, where all events end by 10 p.m. and live amplified bands are not allowed, music that is too loud means turning it down or forfeiting the deposit27.

How to Plan Your Wedding Around the Venue's End Time

1. Ask for three times, not one. The last song, the time the bar closes, and the time the last vendor must be out. Then ask whether cleanup sits inside your rental or after it. Those three answers are your real schedule.

2. Work backward from the last song. Take the event hours the venue includes and count back. Six hours ending at midnight means a 6 p.m. ceremony; four hours, as at the Biltmore and Summerour, means the ceremony and dinner have to move quickly, or the ceremony should happen somewhere else.

3. Price the extra hour before you sign. If the venue sells overtime, ask the hourly rate, whether it has to be booked in advance, and whether it is allowed past the curfew at all. At Old Glory Ranch the rate is $100 higher with a band than with a DJ18.

4. Ask where the curfew comes from. A permit, a noise code or a liquor license will not bend. An outdoor ceremony area may also have an earlier limit than the hall: Granite Ridge closes the barn doors at 10 p.m., Contigo ends barn events an hour before the hall, and in California State Parks' Santa Cruz district, events must finish half an hour before sunset and amplified sound is generally prohibited28.

5. Plan the after-party, not an extension. If you want to dance until 2 a.m., it is often cheaper to end on time and move the party to a hotel bar, or to pick a venue built for it. Granite Ridge and Josephine Butler run to 1 a.m. as standard, and Josephine Butler to 2 a.m. on New Year's Eve16.

When an Early End Time Works in Your Favor

A 10 p.m. curfew is not always a loss. Several of the early-closing venues here are city-run halls and public gardens with modest rates: Cameron Park Clubhouse rents for $1,350 a day15, and an earlier finish means fewer hours of bar, band and staff on every invoice. A late-afternoon ceremony and a 10 p.m. last dance is a full wedding, and your guests with a drive home will thank you.

Finding Venues That Stay Open Late Where You Are Getting Married

Search the venue's FAQ and rental agreement for "end time", "curfew", "amplified" and "overtime" before you tour; the venues that publish these terms usually publish them there. If a venue lists only "rental hours", ask whether that window includes setup and cleanup. For a late party, look first at downtown ballrooms and historic halls, which in our sample were the venues that ran to midnight or later, and check the city's noise rules if any of the party is outdoors. Frequently Asked Questions

What time do most weddings end?

Most weddings end between 10 p.m. and midnight. Of 22 venues we checked in 16 states and Washington, DC, 19 end by midnight: eight by 10 p.m. or earlier, three at 11 p.m. and nine at midnight. Two allow 1 a.m.

What time should a wedding end?

A wedding should end at the venue's published end time, minus any cleanup that falls inside it. Work back from that time by the event hours you have, usually four to seven, to set the ceremony time.

What time do wedding receptions end?

Wedding receptions usually end between 10 p.m. and midnight, and the bar often closes before the music. Old Glory Ranch in Texas closes its bars 30 minutes before the event ends, and Texas law stops alcohol service at midnight on weekdays and 1 a.m. after a Saturday unless the venue holds a late-hours certificate.

Why do wedding venues have curfews?

Wedding venue curfews usually come from a permit, a noise ordinance, a liquor license or the neighbors. Napa County writes event end times into winery permits, Denver lowers its noise limit at 10 p.m., and many rural venues set an end time to keep the peace with the people next door.

Are there wedding venues without a curfew?

Yes, but they are rare among venues that publish their rules. Granite Ridge Estate in Maine and Josephine Butler Parks Center in Washington allow events until 1 a.m., and Old Metropolitan Hall in Charlottesville sells time until 2 a.m. for $250 an hour.

How much does it cost to extend a wedding by an hour?

An extra hour costs from $250 to $5,000 at the venues we checked. Most fall between $500 and $1,000: $500 at Dream Point Ranch, $750 at Vista West Ranch, $800 at St. Francis Hall and $1,000 at the Chicago Cultural Center. San Francisco City Hall charges $5,000 plus staff.

What happens if a wedding goes past the venue's end time?

You can lose your deposit or pay a penalty rate. Newland Barn in Huntington Beach keeps the full $500 deposit if an event runs past its end time, and Golden Gardens Bathhouse in Seattle charges time-and-a-half for the room and staff.

Does the end time include cleanup?

Often, yes. At Golden Gardens Bathhouse, Cameron Park Clubhouse and Josephine Butler Parks Center, setup and cleanup must fit inside the rental, so the music stops about an hour before the end time. Contigo Ranch and Summerour Studio give an hour for cleanup after it.

Venue details reflect published information as of October 2026. Confirm current end times, overtime rates and noise rules directly with each venue, and in your signed contract, before booking. Permit conditions and local ordinances change; check with the city or county where the wedding takes place.
